In this tutorial we will be creating a homepage layout for a fictional non-profit organization. Many non-profits and charitable organizations share similar needs for a website, including information about the organization’s history, purpose, and what they do, as well as a way to stay in contact with supporters and donors, and to provide the organization with a face to new visitors.

Early last year, I worked on the redesign of a rather content-heavy website. Design requirements were fairly light: the client asked us to keep the organization’s existing logo and to improve the dense typography and increase legibility. So, early on in the design process, we spent a sizable amount of time planning a well-defined grid for a library of content modules.

Last year I wrote a tutorial showing how to create clouds using Adobe Photoshop. However, I have received quite a few emails asking me how to create a text made with clouds. Because of that I decided to write a very quick tutorial showing how to do it.

Last week we published our 10th Wallpaper of the Week. It was an awesome typography/design from Ginger Monkey Design called Compassion. What I really liked about that design was how they mixed some "frilly bits" with the typeface to create an outstanding piece of work. I decided to create a tutorial showing you how to do that as well.

Yesterday it was raining and I decided to create a water effect. I didn't know what to do then I saw the desktop wallpaper I'm using, a image from the depthCORE Heist chapter created by Sumeco that we used of the Wallpaper of the Week 43. To create the effect, I had to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Maxon Cinema 4D.

Among numerous comments we found many request for a gallery-theme that could be particularly useful for portfolios and showcases. Color is one of the most important parts of your website. However, far too often color enters the equation as an afterthought, or worse, not all all. This isn’t adequate. Color helps define how users perceive information. To add to the complexity of this issue, most of the judgements people make about your site’s color schemes are subconscious. They may not provide any feedback about your site’s color, but they’re always thinking about it.

Every single element on a page is a rectangular box. The sizing, positioning, and behavior of these boxes can all be controlled via CSS. By behavior, I mean how the box handles it when the content inside and around it changes. For example, if you don’t set the height of a box, the height of that box will grow as large as it needs to be to accommodate the content. But what happens when you do set a specific height or width on a box, and the content inside cannot fit? That is where the CSS overflow property comes in, allowing you to specify how you would like that handled.

This CSS tip is really basic, and I’m sure a lot of people who are comfortable working with CSS won’t probably learn anything new here, but I thought I just share this anyway. I believe this is a very useful tip for people just starting out. It’s about how you add a background image to a heading 2 element and have it perfectly aligned on the right side of the text while keeping the default block element behavior.

Following the series of effects with text, there were the Water, Clouds, Light, and also some time ago the Frilly Bits… Now I will show you how to create a nice effect I saw a few months ago on DeviantArt that is a text mixed with some milk splashes. We will use Photoshop and Illustrator for this tutorial.
